cape honeysuckle

hey guys i got this one today cos i though it had some funky shape to it, ive gone with a twin trunk style, to a degree, i think it has lended itself to bonsai and with a bit more growth of foliage will come out great. i like the turns in the trunk.

I'm working with the same species. It is the fastest growling plant I've worked with.

I have done many cuttings of the Cape Honeysuckle, they are too easy. This tree/shrub is considered a pest in California I am told.
I have several large ones at the store and have potted and styled several for customers. They do make great bonsai and like to be on the damp side but recover if let dry for a short period. They can be pruned hard and they will bounce back fast.
A fun specie to play with because of the fast response time.

Have fun, ...Hector

I have one as well, and they are "easy" in a sense. However, if they are subjected to below freezing temps for even one night, then they loose everything until spring. Even cold (not freezing) winds will make the leaves turn yellow and drop. I bring mine inside every night during the winter (we usually do not get more than a few freezing nights here in Bakersfield).

i think it will be all good here then, even in winter it doesnt get below 20 degrees celcius at night, so it should thrive in this climate!

cute plant, and I wish I could get my hands on one. I'll have to be on the lookout especially as you say they are fast growing.

I think the one think I might do with yours if it was mind is trim back that top left hand branch. You have more interesting movement on the right hand side that goes with the trunk, but the left hand is a little stick like. Trim it back then develop little branches there (the correct word just escapes me at the moment). But it looks very nice.

I cut mine down at least 70%, it was pushing up new stalks within two weeks.
