Candle Removal
I salvaged this tree at the end of last year for $25. It looked like it was on its way out and I planned to jin 90%. Well, I cleaned out some branches this spring, didn't even repot it yet and all of a sudden the thing has sprung candles up all over. I did trim off the top and wired an apex. Thoughts?

Thats a spruce (Picea genus), which doesn't form candles. That growth you are seeing now comes in one flush every year in the spring, from buds formed the previous summer.
As a precaution to avoid branch die-back, spruce are best wired before the buds begin to grow. Although you seem to have done it a bit late, removing the wire might do more harm than good. Re-pots are best done in the early spring too, again before bud burst. Just be careful about working the branches and the roots at the same time. These things are surprising, they really have a knack of springing back to life when they look a bit worse for wear. Pinching back the buds when they have extended to about an inch will encourage backbudding; in nature they will just keep throwing out buds at the branch tips at the expense of inner foliege. They lend themselves to formal upright very well, just watch out for bar branches. Looks like yours has 2 trunks, that could be interesting Good to see another spruce-grower!

Richard, Thanks for the guidance. I had a habit of always calling new growth "candles"; thanks for the correction. I actually rewired prior to the explosion of new foliage you see there. I purchased it because of the twin trunk. At first I thought there was only one vein that was supplying the tree and there'd be some new growth amidst a jinned up tree-nature surprised me! Can I over pinch? They're all at about an inch now or a wee bit over. I love spruces but have had mixed success.
Thanks again! |

I just pinched back mine. On lower branches, I pinched back each 'candle' (for arguement's sake, I don't know the exact terminolgy either
) by a third, and each 'candle' at the top of the tree by half. I don't know if it's possible to overpinch, although I wouldn't remove the new growth completely or work a tree that was sickly. I've had mixed success too,but from what I can gather they like full sun and a bit of air movement, but not high temps or too much humidity. There is a really famous twin trunk spruce somewhere-check walter pall's gallery cheers
