California Redwood Telephone Pole- no more
Hi,
Was working to get the plants that returned with me from WBC in DC put in their places when I realized that I still had a relatively large "telephone pole" style California Redwood (Sequoia semipervens (sp?)) languishing in the mica pot I had placed it in a couple of years ago. Zach Shimon (Mendocino Coast Bonsai) had collected it (I believe in 2001) and had shipped it out to me in '02. In the past I have generally picked out more knarly, shorter trees, this time I wanted one of the big boys. So I have looked and looked at this tree- it was about 48" tall had a 9-10" base and, as I had asked for, no real taper. The picture on the left shows the post cleanup picture after removing all of the adventitious growth and the dense budding that occurs around the base. I then noticed that it had a significant low reverse taper at the base 9that went around the tree almost completely, that could only be fixed by either planting deeper, or the ArborTech. I chose the arbor tech. The carving was done 3 weeks ago, the tree has pushed a bunch of new growth and will soon be ready for wiring. Any ideas, the "window" in the back is due to a large area of dead wood resulting from a second "trunklet" that was removed from the burl when the tree was collected. (the bucket that contributes to the fine back ground is of the standard 5 gallon type) Last edited by Vonsgardens : 24-Jul-2005 at 06:04 PM. Reason: sppppppelling |

I think it is looking great and alreadyis starting to tell a story. Were you able to carve this much at once or was the area mostly on its way out anyway?

Looking good - I think you made the right choice. It makes the best of the existing trunk bulk & I like the holes. How will you be treating the deadwood? Will you wait for it to dry out and then lime sulphur or burn it with a torch?
Regards, Matt

Wes,
I did it in one session. Was all alive- the redwoods and cypress can take tremendous amounts of carving as long as you keep them "moist/wet and protect them from the wind and sun right after working them. It is now under 50% shade and will move back to 30% shade in a couple of weeks. Matt, I have a bunch of fine carving to do. Redwood is so wet and "chewy" that I will usually let them sit a month or so and then go back and put some finer tuning on them. Then I will go back and limesulpher and india ink to preserve. John |
