California Juniper, before and after

The first picture (below left) is the juniper in December, 2000. The second was made in July, 2004. I'm very happy with the progress so far.
Harry Hirao collected this juniper about 10-12 years ago, and donated it to the Golden State Bonsai Federation convention raffle in November, 2000. I was the lucky winner. Height from table is about 46 inches.

Mike,

Can you explain the new planting angle shown in the second picture?

To me, the original angle was perfect or nearly so. The current angle is static, its right angles jar against the twisting sinuous lines of the live veins and gorgeous shari, the base has gone from beautifully flared to nearly reverse-tapered, the full composition seems badly off balance, and the trunk no longer harmonizes with the foliage mass.

(On the positive side, it's a nice illustration of what a few years of good soil and fertilizing technique can do.)

Best regards,
Carl

Mike, congratulations, that is a wonderful piece of juniper you have there!

Carl, here are a couple of virtuals,

The first is turned clockwise just a bit (my preference) and the second clockwise quite a lot, something closer to the as-received view that I think you were talking about. I didn't touch the foliage.

Regards,

Matt

Wow matt...You visualized what I visualized Carl visualized pefectly...

I do much like your virt Matt...The pads seems more "comfortable" now..

2nd Edit: With the original I think a different pot or a shift in placement could be advantagous..

Matt,

This is very interesting. I'm astonished that the small shift in your first virtual works as well as it does. I like that view quite a lot as well.

Best regards,
Carl

Very interesting material. The kind that Walter likes for his workshops.
I hope he will chip in on this one.

I like Matt's second virtual, to me it has the best dynamic balance, it is slightly less slanted than the original. With the first virtual, I am struggling to find a role for that strong horizontal branch to the left, it is too strong for the rest of the composition.

I agree with Carl that the actual tree has a most unfortunate planting angle, I think Mike should be ticketed for that

Attila

Not just disagree with everyone, but i think the chosen angle for the tree is very good. It reminds me of a group planting, that incredible trunk being the cliffs with extra junipers planted on top. In all honesty, i looked and looked, but i couldnt tell the difference between matts 1st virtual and the actual tree, not a reflection on matts virtual, just a reflection on my eyes me thinks. I think a tray planting or slate planting might be suitable for this tree to give it a slightly more natural look. i dont know if thats possible because of the rootball though.

To me, the new angle is perfect or nearly so. The new angle is dynamic, its right angles contrasting beautifully with the twisting sinuous lines of the live veins and gorgeous shari, the base has gone from horrendously reverse-tapered to a very acceptable semi-parallel, the full composition seems exquisitely poised, with the new muscular trunkline harmonising with the foliage mass.

just words...

Regards,

Chris.

'In all honesty, i looked and looked, but i couldnt tell the difference between matts 1st virtual and the actual tree, not a reflection on matts virtual, just a reflection on my eyes me thinks.'

Rowan,

with due respect, you will have to train your eyes a lot more. The first virtual of Matt makes all the difference in the world versus the originally posted tree. The slight tilt to the right is making this tree come alive and getting balanced for me. I cannot believe that one does not imemdiately see this. The second virtual is even more dramatic. But then the foliage needs to be rearranged. The lower branch in particular has to come down a lot. I would absolutely tilt the tree slightly to the right or a bit more.

best regards
