California Juniper

Attached are a couple of pictures of a California Juniper I recently acquired via an internet sale, I have not yet physically seen the tree. It is sitting out at a friend's house in San Jose Ca, en route to a weekend workshop at Boon's. So Before I get there, any ideas on styling? If you had the tree where would you take it stylistically? (other than your yard or a landfill). I'll post pictures of what happens at the worshops.

Particulars- 28" tall, base is 10" across. The tree was collected in 1996 in the Mojave. Tree and tub weigh in excess of 100lbs.

Hi John, this is a very interesting tree. It looks difficult and challenging too. These short California junipers can be really hard to style sometimes. I'd love to see how you would style this tree.

Good challenge there John. I kinda like this shot as a front. But I'm sure you are going to surprise us.

At first I thought the first pic would be a good front, but 48813 would be after looking better, although its tough to tell what kind of branching you have to work with. With this tree though, I think the trunk could be the main feature, with minimum foliage ala an ancient juniper, and the branches won't make a huge differance.

Is there much of the trunk below the soil line(probably not, just wondering if nebari might make a differance here, again probably not)?

I think this will be a lesson in jin refining, live vein identification, and foliage reduction. Should make a nice tree.

Beautifull tree. I look forward to seeing the transformation. What I see as challenges, You've probably already resolved.

I like both 11 and 16, but feel the front is probably somewhere between these views.

Please keep us posted as this great material begins to transforms.

Hi,
Worked on the tree abit this weekend at a BIB workshop at Boon's. This is the front that we came tofollowing a democratic process involvng 7 or 8 prople. We cleaned it up and pruned it. Wiring has started and will be done next weekend. More pics will follow.
