That Buxus-n-Ficus'
Hey all, Not much to talk about since it got so darn cold here in Pa. Brrrrrrr. But fortunately I finally have a pic to post of the buxus, and ficus I have been asking questions about.
The buxus is "10"yrs old, and is still inside on a cold sill close to the glass. The ficus' are 4yrs (center), and 5yrs (rigth side) that I have been tinkering with hope you all enjoy. I know, I know. I should have taken closer pictures, Sorry promise I will next time. Photographer I am not. Would love to hear your comments. ![]() Last edited by DavidJinPA : 25-Jan-2003 at 10:59 PM. |

Hi David,
Your window sill looks a lot like mine right now, ficus and all. Have you ran into any problems with the trees being close to the cold glass? Most of mine are in plastic pots but the one I have in a ceramic container is the one I've been concerned about. I like to leave it close to the glass for the sun, but when I come home at night I move it away from the sill. The pot gets very cold. I haven't noticed it causing a problem. It's growing slowly but I'm not sure whether to blame it solely on winter and the fact that it's inside or if it could be the pot and roots getting cold too. Here's a pic of my window sill. I bought all of these at Home Depot right after I got into bonsai this time last year. They grew really well outside this past summer.

Yes it sure does look like my window sill. I really haven't had any real problems with the cold, except the slowing of growth with the Ficus. I keep the Ficus' about 8 inches away from the glass so they don't get too cold. I do keep the buxus very close to the glass (2 inches) so it feels a "seasonal change", but wouldn't it figure thats the one that just keeps growing.
(I moved it forward for the pic) Lights always a problem. I really wish I had a Huge south facing bay window. Maybe someday. ![]()

They all do go into dormancy in the winter so I doubt the window will bother them. I know my ficus all keep growing but very slowly. In fact, sometimes when they seem stressed out, i put them in my greenhouse that I keep around35-40 degrees for several weeks and when I bring them back in they seem to have really enjoyed the rest.
The trees all look great! Earl |
