Buxus Looks Like A Slingshot

Here's my buxus, I have let it grow freely for the last year. The tree is now dormant. I planned to do some restyling at this tree this year, if I come up with something good.

This tree looks like a toy... You could put a rubber band between those two branches. I have been thinking of cutting the bigger brach of to get some taper, but then i would end up with a tree that I don't know where to go whith...

Here's my virtual. I removed the bigger branch and changed the potting angle. It would be nice to get some hints on how to develop this tree.

Telling it like it is

Tiny plant

This is one you sell. It's not as bad as a true Y Slingshot, but you're correct that trimming it back doesn't help it much either. There is no where to go with this one in a 5 year timeframe. Put it up on the next club sale or auction and put the cash towards something with some potential.

Regards,

Matt

I concur with Matt, this would make excellent hedgeing material in the yard. Maybe next time! Al Keppler

I added a right side branch, which it needs, and then you'd want a back branch, and you'd work your keister off and wind up with a mediocre bonsai 10 years from now

I was reading this article about graftin so I got this idea about cutting the smaller brach away and grafting it more down, to get away from the Y-look. Again, I am not that experienced at these things, so it would be nice to here some comments.

Instead of cutting and grafting you could always air layer the tree just below the Y and create the twin trunk style you have. I think it would be a whole lot easier than grafting.

I'm not sure about air layering buxus, but I'm sure someone here knows.

Nice, that sounds alot easyer If someone would have any experience on layering a buxus, it could help. Or would I just do it as on any other tree?

I would assume the procedure would be the same. I just don't have any experiance with this species to know if there is any special care required.
