A Buttonwood And A Hornbeam
Took the risk and repotted this Buttonwood today in a much shallower pot than it was in. The temps here in Tx have been staying in the 70s overnight so I think we'll be alright.

My Korean Hornbeam wasn't looking too good there for a while.
I guess it was still recovering from last years hail storm when it was defoliated too early because of the hail. May is a good time to do any defoliating here in Tx. if it needs to be done on K. Hornbeams, not the first week in April like last year. Anyway it's not looking too bad now so I thought I would post it.

Thomas, as per every tree I see you post that Hornbeam is fantastic.
How big is it? I'm Guessing about 36-38cm/14in?

Adam,
The damage was minimal, but the partial defoliating by the hail too early in the season weakened the tree. This tree finally came around this year. I have another huge one that has a lot of dead branches because it didn't come back as strong as this one did.

They're both gorgeous!
My personal favorite of the 2 is the button wood. It has a sense of welcoming towards it, (I actually see the image of some one waiting with open arms) Very beautifully styled. Where did you get it? That trunk has a great shape to it. Kinda reminds me of the trunks of some trees here that get beaten up with snowploughs! Very nice texture too. Dane |

Dane,
I got the tree from Mary Madison when she was vendoring at the the Kimura convention here in Dallas in 2002. This is what it looked like at purchase.

Thomas,
I like the buttonwood also. The styling is unusual & much better than the original trunk position at the time you acquired it! The image it evokes in me is that of a dancer or skater outstretched and balanced on tiptoe at the end of a graceful performance! Can't help it, it's the romantic in me?! ![]() As always I love your trees! Maybe next year, you could repot it in a more feminine pot ? Or do you guys & gals see a masculine side to the composition ie the trunk? (Heavy and carved out) Does this qualify as a Literati? I have trees that I consider feminine and some that are masculine. My winged spindle feels like a guy tree and my J. Snowbell is curvy like a girl! Heehee!Lesley =('):
