Bush Identification

I have this bush in my backyard that i plan on digging up and attempting to use as bonsai material. I was wondering if anyone could help me identify what type of bush this is, if it is suitable for bonsai, and if you have a care guide that would be great too. Otherwise, if i can just find out what kind of bush it is i can find the rest out on my own. thanks a bunch.

Gday Cantstop!

Looking at the second picture, my guess is Escallonia. But then again, it is 4 in the AM, so it's entirely possible that I'm wrong.

Good luck.

The leaf edges have a small serration so my guess is Japanese Holly or winterberry, don't know the botanical name but it could be Ilex 'something'.

I also think it is probably an escallonia. Should be getting little pink flowers soon. They use them everywhere in landscaping in Northern California. Should make a good bonsai, though I have never seen one at a show. Four years ago I came across 3 that were dug from a landscape and thrown in a field. I retrieved one of them, planted it in a wood box, and it came back nicely. The trunk was about 5 inches across. I sold it to a club member for 40 dollars because it was more than I wanted to deal with at the time. Silly me.

thanks for the help guys i don't recall this bush ever flowering.... i don't think it really does anything... we have other bushes around the garden that are similarish and they have pink flowers all over them at the moment.. we'll see i may be entirely wrong, i haven't paid that much attention i'll go take a look at the suggestions you've made. Thanks a lot for all your help .... oh I don't know if it helps or not, but i've noticed that many of the branches that have touched the ground have grown roots.. it seems to do that really easily

Looks like Ilex serrata, Japanese holly. Wouldn't swear to it though.

Ok so i talked to my parents and apparently the bush does get pinkish flowers on it. so we'll say maybe it is esallonia thanks for your help... i'll have to wait till it flowers to confirm, but we'll see.. it's taking me forever to dig the thing up, it's right on top of a million water pipes and electrical stuff, so i have to be careful while I dig.... i hope i get a big enough root ball, but it was a kinda now or never thing, so we'll see, i hope it lives, its beautiful

Ok it's all dug up and potted in a huge pot. Ugh i'm going to be sore tomorrow... i hope it lives... I think i got a pretty big root ball... there was no tap root, which has a relief, unless i just somehow managed to get the whole thing since it was pretty much planted on a huge cement slab. Well wish me luck, i'll start a new thread with pictures later, then let it grow out this year (if it survives) and get advice for styling next year.. though we could start thinking of ideas now... whatever, we'll see, right now i'm just really excited that i managed to dig that up... my dad said i could have it if i could get it out.. i wonder what my mom is going to say when she finds out.... i wonder if she'll even notice? Thanks everyone for your help.

One more thing - if anyone has any care guides for Escallonia (if that is what this is) or knows anything about caring for them and could let me know that would be great. Thanks again everyone
