Burt Davyi Ficus Trunk Chop?

Hello all you out there in bonsai land.

This is the only one of my burt davyi ficus that does not have the black spots, or any pests at all.

I want to start developing this little guy, about 6 inchs tall.
The red lines are what I want to get rid of.
The pink oval is where I want to perform the trunk chop, What type of cut would be best? Straight, angle (if so what angle), "V"?

Thanks guys and gals

-Paul

Paul:

I hesitate to get into this, but seeing the pictures...

Am I correct that these are the dwarf Burtt Davyi ficus?

Last July, I brought back one from Florida that had a fungus problem. (Only the dwarf BDs seem to get this.) I was unable to save the tree.

When you cut away the part that's bad, the cut discolors rapidly to the same color, and, well you get the picture. I don't recall black spots on the leaves.

I would either PM dbz12fan (Charles Bevan) or call Jim Smith (or his son, Doug at Dura-Stone (772) 562-5291
to get authoritative answers. Please share what you learn here.

They're lovely trees, but that fungus is a bummer!

I can't give you any advice, but boy do I have a tree that looks so much like yours.

Anyway I wouldn't loose that fat branch to the right. Next Tuesday I'll post some pictures on the "why".

That is sad to hear Bart. Let me know if you want me to pick out a replacement for you . Maybe next time we should try and find one without fungus.

I have this problem right now on one of my burtt davyiis. I thought it might be thrips, but I have not seen any on the leaves. I will have Jim take a look at it and see what he says.

I believe a straight angle chop would be best. I can not tell exactly what angle from the picture, but I would say that the best angle to chop it would be at the angle that gives the most pleasant and natural looking taper to the top of the tree. After the chop, you could use knob cutters to carve it down and give it a more rounded appearance.

One other possibility would be to tilt the tree to the left a good bit and keep the existing trunk line that you have. I like the taper and movement of the trunk as of right now. So, I believe that this would be the best option.

Tipical me, posting pictures of my tree without reading first...

I've just read you had a fungus problem.
Man, if my ficus catches that fungus from this thread, , I'm out to get you midwestbonsai

Hey moderator, please can you place a bigger barrier between my tree's pictures and midwestbonsai's?.

BTW, I hope noone tells me to go on a smiley diet, thanks but no thanks, I've heard the before.

Bart and Charles,
After looking at the three types of Burt Davyi at Jims I jumped on the "Normal" model. I used one Jim had picked out as one of two possible trees for your groups short demo a couple years ago. I kept three for myself and I've also used them in workshops up north twice. Although the leaves are a bit bigger I think the shapes, growing style and arial roots FAR outway having a little smaller leaf. BTW, no fungus probs here. Before you get another dward leaf, check out the "Normals". They all went easily into shallow pots in one pop from Jims bulb pots.
