Burning Bush

# 2 in my series. Bark is outsatnding, height 30 inches spread 20 inches. need a little help with styling. Should I cut back now or wait till fall? If so, where. This little tree looks like a big tree and I think it can be specimen someday. Am I wrong? all comments accepted.
thanks again in advance.

It does need to be cut back but I have no experience with this tree or whether it buds back on old wood. Have to wait for someone with knowledge of this tree.

It is a shrub so yes it will bud back readily.

Unfortunately, all the ramification is out on the end of long branches that don't have any movement or taper. This usually happens when the plant is grown out quickly, and then developed more slowly.

If it were mine, I would make the first cutback something like this. Even after these cuts you'll note it has a little movement but very little taper in the branches. Unfortunately, it is a very long way from a bonsai. It might be better off growing in your yard for awhile to get some taper going since it seems to lack movement.

I know this isn't what you want to hear, sorry.

Regards,

Matt

I have a Winged Burning Bush (Euonymus alata) that I've been chopping back a little bit at a time and it buds back like crazy. Although mine is in the ground, and has never had any root work done to it. I'm not sure if it would respond so enthusiastically in a pot.

Good Luck,

-Cody

I have 6 of these trees (bushes?) in a stage just beyond Steve's. I planted all 6 in the ground for last year and of these have put three back in grow boxes this Spring. All are growing vigorously.

I was interested in the comment regarding their propensity to strongly bud back. The only issue I have is in timing my cutting them back. I have observed that unlike most species here, they seem to grow only in the Spring. Does this mean I should wait until late Winter to cut them back or will cutting them back stimulate a burst of growth at any time?

Fred,
You are so right. spring growth is quite vigorous. I'm hesitant in cutting back in late June. Are yours in full sun? I'm zone 7b. Maybe we can both gain somethig out of this thread. I'd like to see a picture of yours.
