Branch placement for cascade´s

I just recieved a Ulmus cascade from Holland. I am wondering about the standard rules from branch placement on cascades.

On regular (upright) bonsai you often aim for (for instance) left, right, back and so on in a spiral up the trunk to the beginning of the apex.

I have looked at a number of pictures of cascades and it seems that the branch placement is like this: left, top, right and so on. No branches facing directly down. The apex is formed just left and right.

(hope you understand what I mean)

Have I understood it correctly?

Cheers
/Martin

Martin,

A picture or two would be very helpful in understanding your situation.

I think I understand your question.. and the answer is yes.. the same techniques for upright branching are used with cascade. The lowering branch becomes a tree within the tree.
