Re: Boxwood group
Attached are two photos that I took this spring of a masterful fukien tea grouping belonging to the Pacific Rim Bonsai Collection here in Seattle. In many ways, this grouping seems a good model of what yours could become, Rene.
Notice that the main tree is substantially larger than the others, to roughly the same degree that we see in your arrangement. There are plenty of examples of groupings with more extreme differences, but I thought that this one nicely reflected what yours could become. ![]()

Re: Boxwood group
One other thought - I rather like the composition in Rene's grouping, the way that the canopy forms an extended triangle (see the picture below.)
That's something that I rarely see come out so nicely in a first effort at making a forest! ![]()

Re: Boxwood group
Jose,
I am hoping that the trees will fill out in the coming years, so I will not do much pruning exept pinching new shoots( I allready begun doing this). Mister Crow, Thanks for sharing these wunderfull pictures ! Of course my group will never reach this level. My boxwoods lack the great movement in the trunks, but I can use this for reference. I tried to mantain a triangular form and I think I succeeded in doing this. Oh well, maybe I should just wait and see how it developes. Patience, patience... ![]() Thanks ! René |

YOU CAN NOT RUSH TIME

Re: Boxwood group
Rene and OMC...I can certainly see the beauty in the Pacific Rim group(major difference in size noted). It does show the trees going in one direction to the right (with the one going left). I guess what I did not like in Rene's group was the two things together ...Grandfather ...Son...Grandson proportion and the severe two way movement. I too noted the detail to triangle that Rene was able to produce. I guess my eyes are not capable of seeing through to the end with this group....I too appreciate the ability to learn through discussion. Thanks for the post Rene!!!

Re: Boxwood group
Hi Rene
I think you have a really nice group of boxwood there and if they are anything like they are here in australia they grow slow and very compact..nice for groups. I think the number 1 tree being bigger is great, but im not sure about the twin trunks. I see the group as a more rounded or a group of broom stlye trees rather than tall and thin. Mind you it has lots of options for the future. If there is a trunk behind the number 1 tree...lets see him Id bring him out towards the left with the rest of the pack of trees. Also maybe the trees need to be straightened up a bit if you go with the broom-ish style forrest but the spacing is great, very natural.I just love the pot, but i have a thing for blue pots and the moss..wow. I think the pot is the perfect size for the group but the trees are a little too high in the pot. you can make the muck wall thinner and lower and it will still all hold together. Id love to be looking after this group in the future...so much so that i made a quick little virtual... cheers Juliet ![]() |

Re: Boxwood group
Jay,
Thanks, I'm just a newbie and this was my first try on groupmaking. You have to start somewhere I guess.. The comments I got in the forum are very useful, and I guess I would do it a little different next time. Juliet, Thanks for the virtual. I kind of like the twin trunk on the main tree, altough it's probably not following the rules. I think I will adjust the position and angle on some of the trees next year, and maybe I will change pots or, better, look for a stone slab. This pot was available and suitable for the experiment but I think the color is not the greatest with the green of the boxwoods. I agree that the wall is to high but I had to make it like this to have enough room for the roots. I think I can do more pruning next year and make the rootball more flat. Thanks again for making the virtual. I will keep it for next year. rgds, René |

Re: Boxwood group
Rene, I am very glad you posted the boxwood group. It gave us the chance to learn with your experience. I am just a novice who has read a couple of books. Having said that, here are my comments:
a) I think the triangular shape would be important if it was one tree. With a forest, there are other criteria more important. Like the depth. One can get depth putting the larger trees in front and the smaller ones behind. The tree group posted by Mr. Crow, for example has the larger tree at one end, the most visible one. This also gives a sense of depth. I would find another big boxwood, same size as the dominant one and put in the group. b) I agree also in that the trees should be straightened up a little bit. c) The trees look very healthy and I would love to see them nex spring. Best of lucks. Renato |
