Boxing Day

No, this is not a reversal of roles, popular in the UK. This is the day I built some new boxes for some plants. I made two boxes for a couple of plants that I wanted to move along faster in branch development. The oversize boxes should help me to achieve this faster.

I built the boxes about 18" long x 16" deep x about 5" to 8" tall.
I built them out of redwood, and drilled drainage holes in the bottom. I applied aluminum screen over the holes.

I add a strip of redwood along the ends to elevate the box off the ground about an 1 1/2". This helps get air around the roots, and helps get the water away from the box when I water. It also prevents the roots from growing in the ground, which can sometimes be a problem with boxes on the ground. I hope this will make them last longer also.

I popped my new tree out of the plastic bonsai pot that it was in. I was real happy to see the roots on the bottom of the container. I was told that the tree had been in this container for two years.

The roots were very healthy and allready showed signs of new growth on the tips.

I mixed up a batch of soil, 1/3 - 1/8" lava, 1/3 - 3/32" sand, and 1/3 sifted redwood humus.

The bottom of the tree has a big healing scar almost as large as the trunk, probably about 2/3 as big. I figure the tree was air layered off from some large tree in Korea.

I placed a drainage layer of 3/8" lava in the bottom of the box. I do this so the screens don't plug up.

A good old mound of finer soil goes in, and now we are ready for the tree.

The roots have been combed out, and I did a light trim to make a round root spread. These roots on this tree are magnificent. The whole root mass is about 2" tall, and spreads so flat. This will go into a nice drip glaze biscuit brown flat oval tray when it comes time to pot it for display.

This is a view of the front of the tree showing the larger roots and how they come off the trunk. When it is in the soil it should look pretty good. Next year I will graft on some seedlings to improve the nebari further.

This is the tree all boxed up. I did a light pruning on some of the branches that I did not want, but left everything else for the bud break.
