Bougie

Ernie Fernandez visited the Treasure Coast Bonsai Society this past month and did a beautiful fiucs burt davii nana root over rock demonstration. There was some extra time, so he styled this bougainvillea as well. The member who brought it in decided to donate it to the raffle after Ernie styled it. I was lucky enough to win the bougy that Ernie styled.

Ernie knew that this was not the best way to style the tree, but he didn't want to have a two minute demo. This is the part of the tree that I will be working with-

Will you leave the rest of the tree on for a while?

AS I recall, you're coming up on your dormant season, or doesn't this apply to bougies?

We are actually in our dormant season. It is not much of a dormant season, but the weather gets so hot that the trees growth slows down considerably. I could cut it off now if I wanted to. I would rather wait until I repot it to see what the trunk looks like under the soil so I can chose the best place to chop it.

So I'm assumming you will be trying to create a shohin out of the lower half. With all the cuts and no taper this is going to take a long time to achieve something spectacular. Luckily you are still young and have the time.

Persoanally I would of left it as is and let it fill out for a year or so and keep it trimmed. Then I would sell it at a big sale somewhere and people would pay good money for it. Then I would go and concentrate on that incredible bougie of yours that has the "Ask the Master" forum in a heated debated. That is a spectacular tree in the making and where any extra time you have is better off spent. Just my opinion.

David,
Good idea. I may sell it at Bonsai Society of Brevard's annual auction. I don't really have room for it anyways.
