Bougainvillea Stump

This bougie stump was dug last March 2004 from my next door neighbor who was putting up a room addition. They dont have no choice but to get rid of the tree beacuse it was right in the middle of the project. I offered my service free of charge to get rid of the tree provided that i can have the stump for my new hobby. The stump was about 13 inches wide and 36 inches tall at that time. I have air layared the two branches from the top last August 2004 and then separated the branches two days ago. I have also done initial carving of the tree every now and then. The first picture is the before photo and the last 5 photo was taken this afternoon.

May i ask everybodys opinion on this to which possible front would i use for my bougie tree. I have stop carving the tree for now for further study of the possible front. Feel free to make your own virtuals and post it here so that i can compare what have i done. The bougie stump now is 11 inches wide and 17 inches tall ........ enjoy.

Hi,

Well done. The transformation pics are great,a piece like this will turn a few heads.I'm always having to convince my girlfriend that stuff like this is really a living tree.Great work,I like pic 4,5 or 6 as a front based on the cave and wood..

Peter,

Wow! That's a nice piece of material (and nicely photographed as well). I'm impressed by the carving. If you can get the kind of development on this that Charles Bevan has gotten on his bougie, it'll be a real gem.

I like the final view. This provides the best of all worlds: a spreading pyramidal base, a clear view at the interesting carving, and the live wood along the right edge that seems the equivalent of showing a live vein along the front of a driftwood juniper.

Keep us posted!

Best regards,
Carl

I personally am amazed at its transformation, I have many old bougans nearby that i might be able to shift although i am worried about their fragile root systems of such big trees? You obviously had no problems...Was there anything you did special in its excavation apart from a lot of patients?

Thanks and good luck with it

'61 or '62 is definitely the front, I lean towards '61. The foliage to the right "under" the deadwood is very dramatic. The apex would appeal to me best kept low. It looks like that is the way you are proceeding.

Great material. Please let us know its progress.

John
