This picture was taken a few weeks ago. So, it was actually a little less than two months ago. It was before I did any pruning, so now it looks less developed than it did before; I am more worried about ramification right now than anything else.

My original idea for this bougainvillea was to have a much larger head of foliage. I have, however, decided that a smaller head of foliage will make the trunk look much larger. The trunk is huge, so I would like to make that the focal point instead of the flowers.

Hmm. Where did you pick up such a beast ?

I like the developpement and I think you are right wanting to emphasize on the trunk. The deep inside trunk is the main attraction.

But for sure, some flowers on such a trunk would be nice.

Gee, you wouldn't have a friend with a trailer there, would you?

You live in Canada, though. It is hard to grow bougainvilleas up north. This tree has probably been growing in the ground for 20 to 40 years. You cannot do that up north.

It has been a little more than a month since the last photo. This tree has been growing like crazy thanks to the help of fertilizer. I just trimmed it back today. The right side seems to be growing much slower than the left. I am allowing the lower right branches to grow much further out.

Comments, suggestions, pot suggestions, arguments on whether it will be ready for show by next July (remember, I am in Florida)?

Hi Charles,

In my experience on trees that were recently cut back, it's a good idea to let them grow like crazy in a big container to heal trunk wounds and be insured that the plant's vigorous. This is based on experience with bougies and wisteria.

If you do keep them reigned in and pinched back, you can get the sap starting to withdraw because the tree doesn't need a lot of living surface area to nourish a few small branches. Then the open wounds never heal.

Regards,

Matt

The tree hasn't been recently cut back hard. All of the major cuts came from when it was originally collected a year and a half ago. I doubt that the large cut will ever heal over, so I am going to use Dale Cochoy's technique to paint it over with a mix of acrylics and lime sulpher.
