Boug

This is a Bouganvillia that I rescued from a Caravan park that was getting demolished. It was growing in an old washing machine tub about 30 inches across. Completely root bound, I had to cut the tub off with an angle grinder. Collected in Decemer last year.

This is the Boug 6 months later. After much deliberation, I decided that the best course was to hollow out the trunk to go for the rotted trunk look. My long term goal is build a ramified canopy over the top. Probably look at getting it into a pot in the next couple of years.

I like this tree! I think you're right on with your plan for the future. It looks like you're on the way to getting there (new growth)! I have a bougie too, luv them all! I will be watching what you do with this one. There's a post in the gallery of another one that was rescued from the garbage and it's also magnificent with a dead gnarly trunk!

Thanks for sharing it's how we learn!

Lesley

That's a big lookin' tree! How big is it by the way? Was the U shaped part a curved root?
That will look phenomenal,
jm

Thanks Jim. The container that it is in is approx 650mm or 25 inches across. The u-shaped part was an extremely large root which I am reducing. I will root prune again this spring and maybe get it into a training pot.

I liked that tuberous growth part. Sorry to see it go, but it did take over the design.

Regards,

Matt

The "u" root was cool, but I think you made the right decision. The nebari on this hog is great! When it is in a bonsai pot, and has some canopy to it, and those spreading roots at the base it is going to garner a lot of attention at shows. Great find!

Thanks Ralph. I thought about it long and hard but there was no real way that I could incorporate the root into a realistic tree image. Having said that, cutting the root was akin to cutting off one of my own arms:-)

Well speaking of cuttings, if you still have that root, it would be well worth rooting.

Regards,

Matt
