Bonsaial's new tree

While down in L.A. at the convention I made time to go to Chikugo-En Bonsai Nursery. If you read Bonsai Today there is a great article about the nursery. I found all sorts of little Kishu Shimpaku that Masuru Ishii propagates. These are trees that have a "San Jose" bottom and a shimpaku top. The foilage is really dense and does not need constant pinching(see article). My wife bought all the accent plants that the nursery had it seems like. We had a blast there, they are neat people. Mas and his son, Gary were at the show and his wife was running the nursery. Reiko, Mas' wife took a shine to my wife, I guess she doesn't see many women there, and went in the back and brought my wife a Chikugo-En calender for 2002. She was hiding it in her arms and gave it to my wife along with a couple of pens, and enough brochure's for the Texas show with Masahiko Kimura, to supply all the bonsai nursery's in Cal. Well I got my tree and it is my second from Mas. Thee tree is 7 inches tall with a 1 inch trunk. Threre is allready shari on the trunk, and I will add more. This will be styled in the Jim Gremmel "yamadori style" next year. I can't wait for spring. We havn't even had winter yet.

Re: Bonsaial's new tree

Mas is the master of grafting shimpaku, Only one warning. I have purchased two of Mas trees and both were restyled by the hammer head borer. I gave one as a gift and still have the other. Maby I am just a borer magnet. Watch for foliage discoloration and then go digging for the little critter. Tree looks great hoping for the best.

I have had borer problems with some Junipers that were purchased as "staked topiary" which I restyled. It's pretty disheartening to see first a branch turn brown in a few days, then everything above it start to go.

Usually if you root around a bit you'll see some evidence; frass or sawdust clogging the exit holes or maybe the holes themselves. A shot of lindane in the hole usually does the trick, or you can try skewering it with a wire. I suggest both.

Regards,

Matt

Just Punishment

I swear if i got that little sucker out alive I would make sure he received some just, slow, and painful funishment, i mean punishment. Though i haven't tortured anything in years, when i was younger i would capture flies caught behind windows and zap them with those clicker type ignitors that are used to start up grills, or alternately those clicker type ignitors that are used to start the flame on clicker type cigarette lighters. I would think it is a close equivalent to our electric chair. Don't get me wrong though, I haven't tortured anything, except for myself, for the past few years.
For more torture ideas, just look up any pre 18th century Christian history (pre 19th for that matter)
PS I like Jesus, just don't like the "church"

good day

Al,

I live down in Orange county, Ca and have been by Mas' nursery a couple of times. His trees are beautiful. The San Jose root stock does seem to increase the speed of growth and over all health of the tree. Nice little tree. Have fun with it!
