Bonsai Styled After Urban Trees

Urban styled bonsai

Hello,
This Florida red maple is the first tree I collected (from my own property) about 3 years ago when I first started playing with bonsai again.
.I dug it at the wrong time of year, butchered it, repotted it at the wrong time of year into the wrong kind of soil, whacked at it indiscriminately again, carved on it to try to hide my mistakes
and did just about everything else wrong that you can think of.
The darned thing lived but I could see that it would never be a bonsai.
Seeing as how it was my first dug tree, it had some sentimental value and I was loath to let it go, especially because I kept seeing something in it that reminded me of trees I see in urban settings.

I was going to replant it this winter in an obscure corner of my land and let nature try to make a real tree out of my folly but then I had one of those Eureka! moments.

I have found a way to Save This Tree!!! Urban bonsai!

Yes! It is a new, bold step in bonsai styling but I am willing to share my genius and creativity.
And, yes, I am a humble man, but I am also a realist and know this must be shared.

Jay W.

And now (hanging head in embarassed humility with tongue firmly in cheek)

The Urban Maple!!

I see potential in this tree actually. Although I am new to this so maybe I am insane. Here is a direction I could see this tree achieving. Chop left trunk, remove one lower branch on right and bend the other down some. Then bend the right trunk left.

Or go with a slanting style.

Thanks Nathan,
You are quick with your virtuals!
The only problem with it though is that that limb is no longer a viable part of the tree. The bark and cambium has died completely around it. It's trying to make roots (see callus) and I could air layer it off but I've got hundreds of little maples like that growing wild, so I don't need it for that. The other limb on the tree is pretty useless. I'll plant the tree deep enough for that one limb to root and maybe have a nice shade tree in 20 years.

I guess you didn't think much of my urban bonsai idea huh?

ouch, amazing what a 2d picture can hide. If you plant it that deep it probably wont survive. I thought the urban idea was funny/fun though I just thought i saw some hope for the tree until you showed the back side :\

Ouch is right! If there is any truth to bonsai being cruel to trees, I have flat out tortured that one. These swamp maples are pretty tough. I'll bet that one, with its strong will to live, will make it in the ground even planted deep.
Here's a pic of another one that I've been easier on. It's got a nice trunk but gets screwed up where the branching starts. I can see this one going back into the ground if I can't improve this area.

We're all in guffaws over here at the urban bonsai. The local utility, PG&E used to be famous for tree butchering just like this. Recently they have cut back on maintenance services though...

Thanks for the laugh. BTW, I think you can always cut back that maple yet again, it looks like it has pretty decent roots.

Regards,

Matt

I didn't go for the urban idea.

Here is a virtual using the lower part of the trunk and making the tree a mame.

'I didn't go for the urban idea'
You're right Charles, it's probably an idea ahead of its time.

Thanks for the virtual. I am thinking of a trunk chop on the second tree. It's about the only way I see to cure the horrible branching.
How about a virtual of that tree as a larger broom style? I can't grow mame 'cause I'm generally not home in the middle of the day to water them.
Thanks,
Jay W.
