Blue Star Cascase
This is my first attempt at a juniper and at cascade style. The pot may be slightly large, but I am moderately pleased with how it turned out. The only difficulty I encountered when trying a cascade was what to do with the branches that don't cascade. Is there a general rule of thumb?

Nice start. I think you have the basic structure for a good cascade.

Thanks David. Would you tweak any branches at this point or just continue to let it grow?

I would continue to let it grow. I would consider doing some pinching on the top of the tree to maintain that area while you let the cascading branch grow unhindered.

I've seen people grow cascades like this with the pot lying on the side. They would water normally, let it drain for 15 to 20 minutes, then lay the pot on it's side. You might want to try this technique to get the cascading branch to grow more vigorously than the top branches.
Good luck.

I've never heard of lying a tree on its side. What's the "science" behind that?

I have used the technique that geodude mentions. What happens it, that the tree thinks the end of the long branch is really it's apex, and due to apical dominance, the "apex" will grow faster, thus elongation that paricular branch. A tree always grows fastest at it's apex, rather than the lower branches, I guess that's how they get bigger quicker in nature
The way I would do it is I would lay your pot on it's "right hand side" so that the cascading branch points upwards. The tree will "think" this is it's apex, and grow more vigorously there. It certainly seemed to work on a juniper that I had. Dane |

in addition, you may need to protect the soil from spilling out of recently repotted trees......ace bandage wraps have worked well for me in the past for this sort of thing. Established moss and soils most likely do not need it.
