John,
This tree is gorgeous!! I love the how ultimatley natural it is! The work on the roots is exactly what it needed. The huge depth and complexity yet uncluttered look is astounding. I recommend showing it to Walter in the ATM section, not that it needs changing.

I think "majestic" is the word,
jim

Hey !Thanks Jim and Dan.
I got these these cuttings from old wood believe it or not. I have these stone planters i made and filled them with pro mix and some lava rock. Used to plant flowers in them but after awhile they turned into cutting beds. (imagine that) I used to through all my big cuttings away. One day I got a wild hair up my butt and just applied hormones and stuck into the pro mix and out of maybe 5 cuttings one would root well. Shimpaku root very well. I have a cutting that took from both the mother and the child. Now I have a Grandchild!!! As you can see its put out plenty of new growth this year, This winter I will just pile some oak leaves over it and wait.
boy they grow up so fast,,

Regards
John

This is a perfect example of how a bonsai forum should work. John aquired the tree, sought some help, did the work and posted the results. And.. very nice results. In fact I am hard pressed at this time to find anything I would change on this tree. This is marvelous.

Not only that, this is a great sucess story.

Very nice story John, Al

You can look at this shape evokes a pastoral setting: a single oak on the plain beneath which some cattle browse in a puddle of shade on a hot afternoon. This is a tree that isn't going anywhere anytime soon. The roots should reflect that fact.

Wow! And I thought I was the only one who dove so deeply into a tree. So I am not mentally warped after all, or maybe you just are also?

Thanks,

Will

Hi John

I wish more people would make the effort to dig out some of their old threads and revive them with updates.

The tree has turned out great, nice work!

Regards

Mike

Al,
Thanks alot for the comments. I thought that forums are meant to be kinda like this but seems I am sorta shy when it comes to telling what I am thinking so I figured the best way is by pictures

Will:
I think we are all warped when it comes to our trees it has to be an obsession to want to work on them. I belong to a club but it seems that 98.8% of them don't work on their trees enough. This is how warped I am
I dream of hitting the lottery so I can just play with my trees all day (I don't want to work just want to play with my trees all day)

mkonig:
They will dig out old posts as soon as they work on their trees

Thanks all of you and especially Matt who gave me the vision

Regards
John

I absolutely love that tree. It's one of my favorite of all time now.

And it was great seeing a thread where someone came back years later after their intial post to show post some updated pics.

John,

I remember this tree from a couple of years ago. What fantastic rooting around that base. Did you ring the bark all the way around when you layered it? i'm guessing you did by the anount of roots you got to grow but just wanted to confirm it.

Great tree and great work on your part.
