Black Pine
Here's a Japanese Black Pine that I would love to have some advice on. I'm not sure just where I want to go with this and I would really love some virtuals. That is, if any of you feel up to it. I'll probably let it gain some additional strength for a year or two before attempting any radical styling.

Looks like some reverse taper is the main defect. Looks like it might have been planted low in the soil for awhile.
If it were mine I would cut it back to the first branch on the right, and leave a stub to reduce the incidence of die back. After a month or so I would carve the stub and use it is a lever to pull the branch on the right more upright. Then I would plant it in a large box or put in in the ground for at least three years. For the base, that reverse taper really detracts from the appearance of the bark. I would be tempted to wrap a galvanized steel wire pretty tightly around the base from bottom up to the first branch. Then I'd just let the tree grow into the wire. Once it had, I would wrap another wire in the opposite direction. This is pretty effective as you can see some of the results here if you search on "WIRE SCAR" Regards, Matt
