Black Olive

This is the black olive that I was talking about few weeks ago.

I am trying a Shohin with it, I made a Trunkchop and wire a branch up to make the top and a branch on the back. I know is not so thick, so I leave few branches that I would eliminate in the future.

Hi,

I would go ahead and wait about 5 years before I did any cutting on this one.
That includes roots aswell as the foliage and branches. In the middle of your growing season(summer) I would slip it into a larger pot and just let it keep filling that up for a few years.

You might consider the following: There is a simple way to increase the the girth of small young olive trunks and to drastically improve their taper. Cut the top off of the olive at the first branch. Let this branch grow until it is at 3-5 feet long. Cut again at the first leaves above the initial cut (generally this an inch or so above the original cut). Repeat this until desired result is acheived. By allowing the leader to grow out the portion of the trunk below will thicken. Repeatedly cutting back produces a nice taper. The same procedure is used to thicken branches on larger olives and to create a nice taper.

I think the growth on Black Olives are the most beautiful of any tree, its triangular growth is a natural for bonsai. If I had the space indoors, I would grow alot of these and Fukiens. Best of luck with the tree. I can tell you the one I have grows like mad and are hard for me to propagate by cuttings.....
