Black Hills Spruce

This is a collected Black Hills Spruce that I styled with the aid of Boon Manakitivipart at the recent Collected Bonsai Seminar.

Boon is a great teacher (I like him because he doesn't pull any punches). If you do it wrong, you do it again, and I did!!

Anyway, Tree had natural deadwood, so the style was pre-ordained, added additional jin, thinned considerably and did initial wiring and styling on remainder.

Estimated age 80-90 years, height around 10-12 inches tall (tree only).

I really need to find a good pot, but I am not sure what way to go with the style, any ideas.

I have been practicing bonsai for less than a year, so I find all of your critiques very helpful. I have posted a number of trees to my gallery, so please take a look.

To help someone better than I recommend a pot, it would be useful to have a clearer background for the tree in a photo, and perhaps a top view to help provide a better idea of the shape of the tree.

I worked on an older black hills spruce in the Suzuki workshop (will post photos when I have the chance), so my "gut" reaction, presuming that you are showing the front and the potting angle of the tree, would be something with "soft" corners, perhaps even an oval.

If I were you, I'd wait for someone more expert than me to comment.

Regards,

Bart
