Bigger Pot Or Not!!??

I have been working on this cascade for 3 years now and was thinking of repotting into a little bigger pot. My question is do you think it should be in just a little bigger pot?

Hi jhill,

Sorry, I don't have and advice on pot size, but I did want to say what a nice tree. Good work.

Regards,

I dont know about the pot but it seems to me that the upper apex is way to over sized for the rest of the tree. Also where the cascade starts from the trunk appears much thicker than the trunk base. (this may just be the angle). That seems to hurt it in my eyes. I kind of would like to see the apex drastically reduced or perhapse changed to a jin. I would do a virtual but I am waaaay lazy.

Befor repotting this tree try refining the foliage pads. I will generally do this work in late winter (March) so that the foliage will look fairly recovered by mid summer. If you choose to repot, Cool, but I don't think that it is necessary.

I think if you broke up the apex into two pads instead of one massive pad, you wouldn't need a larger pot.. it's the large apex that unbalances it in my eyes.

I want to thank all of you fro the comments. I do need to work on the top a bit more, I have been concentrating on the cascade mostly and let the top gain strength. It was not doing so well.
I know the apex needs worked on and thinned out a bit.

Rip: I definetly will work on refinement before I repot. I was thinking of a slightly bigger pot to help keep the winds from blowing it over. Right now I have to use small bungi straps to hold it down. Its been 3 years since its been repotted. I have styled a few more cascades and placed them in oversized pots to see how they will grow.

Thanks a million
John

John,

I think a change of pot might be a good thing. I don't really know much about the asthetics of cascading bonsai, but just looking at the tree I have a sense that the tree itself is too powerful for the slender round pot that it is in. As the consequence, the whole composition seems unstable, especially in a rotational way, if that makes sense.

How about anchoring it down with a somewhat more substantial four-cornered pot. I think one with rounded edges would be nice. I was envisioning something kind of like this ( From www.bonsaimonk.com )

Comments from anyone? Have I missed the boat here?

Thanks,
Old Mister Crow

Jhill, I too, like the pot that Carl has suggested. I have taken the liberty to do a 'down and dirt' virtual of the tree. Do you think this suggestion has any merit? Obviusly I like the idea but is it too far from what you are looking for?

OMC: That was the pot I was thinking of. I know what you are saying, you should see it with the bungi straps just not my cup of tea. The tree is about 22" from top of apex to bottom of cascade. The pot is 5" by 8".Thanks OMC your vision has hit a note.

Jay: Nice virt but I think I'll keep working on what I started . If you look close you can see where I split the trunk to get it to cascade down. I have been letting the top grow because I think that by splitting the trunk weakened the top a bit. It seems to be doing alot better this year. Thanks for taking the time to do a virtual.

gilby: Nice virt also. I have worked on the cascade to long to cut it off now but the top does make for a nice tree. thanks so much for the interest.
