Big Yew

Hi all,

I'm planning on digging out a rather big yew (taxus) next spring. This tree used to be about 2,5 meters (7,5 feet) high, and the owner wanted to remove it. I persuaded him to leave it until spring but I had to shorten it, which I did. I cut it back to a stump and only left the right branch that is thin enough to bend. The other branches were to thick and straight. I think I can go two ways with this and that is bending the branch up or down. Here is the tree as it is now (it's not very good picture due to my el-cheapo digital camera) :

Re: Big Yew

I have not seen that many yews here in the states. That sure looks like a large tree to dig out. Will you try to pot that in one season, or container it down over a period of years. What's the trunk across at the bottom? It looks to be about 8 inches.

Good digging, Bonsaial

Re: Big Yew

Hi bonsaial,

I don't think I will be able to pot it at once. It will go in a big container first and stay there for one or two years. After that it will go in a smaller container or a pot. The whole development willtake five or six years I guess (assuming it will survive the digging ofcourse ) I didn't measure the trunksize but here's some other pictures to give you an impression of the size of this tree

Re: Big Yew

René,
normally the taxus should sprout with many new buds on the trunk. You don't have to worry hwo exactly you want to use the existing branch. If it survives, there will be hundreds of branches. You have still about 5 years to think about styling. First the tree has to be lifted, then to get ramification.
This will be a powerful bonsai - a sumo bonsai.
best regards

Re: Big Yew

Walter,

Thanks for the virtual ! Indeed I saw a lot of new buds on the old wood. If your virtual is what I could achieve with this yew then WOW ! I am going to lift this tree VERY carefully ! How long will it take before new buds on a yew grow into reasonable branches ? Must be more than five years ??

regards, René

btw, I saw you mention a German Bonsai Forum. Can you give me a URL ? I should be able to read german as good as english

Re: Big Yew

René,
this is the address of the German forum:

http://www.bonsai.org/wwwboard/multipage1.shtml

Yes, it will take many years until the branches get really thick. But you should be able to start serius styling after 4 to 5 years. The rough woodcarving can be started much earlier, like in 2 years.
