A big juniper cascade

Things have been a bit slow around here, so I thought I would post some pice of a Juniper I acquired 6 weeks ago. I just finished the initial styling last week. Unfortunately, I don't have any 'before' pics... when I find a good piece of stock, I'm always too anxious to hold off work on it before photographing it. Suffice it to say that it was basically a large bush with very lush growth. The tree is 40" wide and 24" tall. I also apologize for the relative poor quality of the photos. The tree is too big and awkward to move at the moment.

The first and second pics are of the front and back, respectively. It's impossible to see from the pictures but the first major downward bend in the cascading trunk is courtesy of a turnbuckle. The third and fourth try to show the movement and branching of the cascading trunk.. The apex of the tree is actually the least developed part of the tree right now and I havn't wired it out yet.

Here's a pic of the base...lots of deadwood- I plan to spend some time carving the portion of vertical dead trunk.

Thanks for the kind words. I'll try to take better pictures with a solid background in the near future.

Dav if you could post how you refined the branches (with pics) that would be great. Been looking for ages for a clear picture of a first refinement of a juniper branch.

This tree looks as flat as a pancake needs more branches going from the top of the tree needs a crown and branches emiting form the bottom. But it will get all that with time.

Mike, the tree isn't flat at all, actually, but nicely layered, though the pics don't show it well. The cascading branch, from base to tip, drops over 16" in height. The branches coming off the cascade near the trunk are over 12" higher then the branches near the tip. My side shot was taken from too high an angle to highlight this. The crown is beginning to develop some descent branching...I'm planning on wiring it out later this summer.

Marie, I'm sorry but I don't have any pics of the branches in the process of being trimmed and wired. Some old issues of Bonsai today, as well as more rescent ones, Have good articles on the initial steps in forming branches, along with great pictures.

Good luck,

Dave

Here is a better angle to show the cascading branch.
