Interesting thread TB...it will be educational to see the final results from both groups...the bottom right gets my vote, I am more used to seeing the spread of 'the southern live oaks' in nature, and it is a style I truly like...the bottom right tree has this feel for me with the lower apex...it has nice open spaces, and you can see the inner branching...

I look forward to learning the 'rest of the story' on this thread...

Thanks
Behr

I like the top right. The whole composition is lighter, and I like the taller apex.

Regards,
Dave

Thanks for all the replies so far, very interesting remarks.

Just to clarify, I am not concerned with the quality of photo, lighting, or sharpness etc.

Iam just interested in the view of the tree, although I realise the quality of photo can influence things quite a lot.

All the pictures were taken within 5 days of each other.

Regards,

Chris.

For me, clearly the bottom right. The other views are "bird's eye views" of the tree. At bottom right is the viewing angle from which I am used to seeing trees.

(Though the lighting at top left does have the virtue of obscuring the high crossing roots.)

For me it's the top left, because in the other three the apex does not appear to be directly above the base. Not far off, but that's my choice.

Good thread.

Whoops I forgot something. Although the other three show more of the branch structure, it appears (to me) that the apex is not "bowing" to the front. This may not be correct, but with only one view, you have to roll the dice. I agree that the more visible branching is appealing, but I'm staying with the top left.

I bet the top left would have the best silhouette in winter too.

An update on the voting from non-bonsai growers. More to come in a couple of days. Here's the percentages so far:

Top left :12.5%
top right :25%
bottom left :0%
bottom right :62.5%

Regards,

Chris.

The percentages post was done during lunch break. Now I have more time I'll explain the pictures.

top left is the tree as I bought it. By the the previous owner's frank admission, it "needed someone to take it in hand".

top right is repotted with the old front turned to the left a little, and most of the long shoots trimmed back. There were LOTS of these shoots, about 4" long with only a couple of leaves right at the end.

After some more pruning and guy-wiring, we get the two bottom pictures. They are in fact both of the tree in exactly the same stage of pruning, but taken from different angles (as some have noted).

Now to the difference of opinion between non-bonsai growers and bonsai growers. As things stand at the moment, there isn't much. Both sets prefer BR, with TR 2nd and TL 3rd. Of course, I might just get a run of votes for BL, but somehow I think not.

So far, it has been interesting to hear non-bonsaiist views on things. They talk of 'natural looking', 'treelike' and 'too manicured'. Someone even mentioned 'space for birds to fly through'. Of the ones that picked BR, most of them mentioned that the fact that you could see the brach structure more clearly in that particular photo was a factor in their decision.

Regards,

Chris.

Best I can tell you is that bottom right does it for me. Why might be another question. Not sure there.
It does , to me at least, have the cleanest, most pleasing lines.
