Question Best View Of Elm?

I am conducting a little experiment. I am asking non-bonsai growers and bonsai growers which view they prefer, and would like to compare their opinions.

Let me know what you think, and why. If you'd rather just pick a view and not post why, just vote in the poll.

BTW, just in case you wondered, you lot constitute the 'bonsai growers' section...

Regards,

Chris.

Hey Treebeard,
Is it just my or is the photo all of one view, through different stages of devolpment?
Oh well, if if this is the picture you meant to post I'ld go with the bottom right hand side. I like the way the foliage is thinned out underneith, it shows the structure of the major branches well. The rear branch on top and bottom right hand side looks the most balanced. The layers of foliage look the most mature on this one too. It gives you just a hint of where the smaller branches connect and spread.
I also like the left branch on all the trees. Lots of trees have that "unlucky" branch that is more twisted and beaten on than every other branch. Few bonsai have one.
very cool

I am following this interesting thread with interest. Look forward to discussing it in the future when some more of the "votes" are in!

Ok, I asume we are voting on which picture colouration and which photo we prefer (i asume they were done with differnt amount of light), its obviously all the same tree from the ame angle. Well 4 me its the top left. why? the darker blue background colour in my opinion brings out the colour in the foliage better, the branch structure can be seen more clearly and the darker trunk feels more comfortable, i've heard of people in shows wetting the trunks of there trees just slightly so they look better (matter of opinion). i don't no if it was intentional but the canopy is also fuller in this image. I also like the bottom right but dislike the bottom left the foliage looks a bit blurry (hope it isn't my eyes, it is late), i think there is too much light.

Treebeard,

I was torn between the top left and bottom left. The main reason I did not choose the top left is what appears to be poor lighting. I like the bottom left...just scrolled back up to gather my thoughts and the top right grabbed my attention. Indecisive huh! Anyway, I voted for the bottom left before writing and now wish I could pick the top right. It has space for the birds to fly through as they say. It also seems more finished to my VERY untrained eye. Great tree in all views however.

Bottom right

I like the bottom right. The foliage pad looks "lighter" and more open. The entire tree looks more balanced that the others. Photography wise I like the rich colors of top left, but I assume we're judging the tree, not the color saturation or sharpness of the image.

Thanks.

chris, i have looked at the pictures and it seems that i find the two on the right more appealing, at first because i thought they were the same picture. then i realized that i would vote for the bottom right, the slight rotation of the tree gives a better view of the nebari and branching structure. IMO, bottom right takes it.

Chris, great thread. The different viewing angles make a big difference it how the tree is viewed. The nebari is the same in all photos so that didn't effect my decision. What I was looking for when I saw this tree was a natural looking growing habit. The canopy is the obvious key to which view people would choose. My chioce is for the top right. After looking at the other canopies they seemed too "perfect" i.e. they are not natural and are maintained with trimming. Also the other three have nicely rounded canopies as well which detracts the natural look I am after. Top right has spacing between the branching and the canopy is not as wide as the others. Also there is an apex to this tree rather than a rounded canopy. This view provide the best natural looking representation of an elm. And that is what I was looking for.

Top right. You see more movement in the trunk and the tree seems more balance.

Bottom right...
I can't say why exactly, but it just seems more open and natural to me......i would wire the back branch on the right side down a bit though.

I just read the other posts...........funny, how we all see different perspectives.

nice tree
