Berberis

I found this Berberis tree.
I don't know if they make good bonsai, but this one has kind of a natural windswept style, it's almost an instant bonsai.
Has anyone experience with this species?
Thanks
Marc

There are several Bonsai Today and Bonsai Focus articles on the use Berberis as Bonsai. There is also a great discussion of them in the book "Bonsai Life Histories." At least I think that's the name of the book.

So, yes they are used and that looks like a good start.

I have got berberis tree.. but it died due to strong winter few years ago.... it is probably shaping only with cutting. It is thorny tree, so it is hard to shape with wire. There are many better species for bonsai, but berberis is very nice in some cases (also autumn leaves color is beutyfull).

Sorry my weak english

Oh, and bonsai at the picture is really amazing!!!

Hi Marc,

Great berberis!! I dug 2 out of a landscape last summer. I will give them one more growing season to strengthen before styling.

A few virts of yours to maybe enhance the windswept appearance. Only my opinion though.

Thanks for the virts, they look nice.
I think I will have to wait until I have seen the tree with leaves.

From what I've read, they can't handle frost below -5C, wich must be the case during winter where you live.
