Hello Dale... Well, normally, I put the cold hearty trees in a vacant room in a vacant apartment with no heat for the witer. There are 3 big windows in there, however, no real sun, just light. The room is anywhere from 32-52 degrees f through the winter. My tropicals go in a heated room under flourescent and incandescent light.

Since I just got this Cedar, and it's my first true cedar. I can only say what I think to be correct. This tree came form California, so Its probably used to somewhat warmer temps. It was in the heated greenhouse at the nursery in(massachusetts) last week when I purchased it.

The owner told me that it would need protection this year because of the 2 situations that I have just mentioned. I told the owener of the nursery that I intended to keep it in a hallway that is in the 50's for the rest of the winter. He said that it was perfect for the tree at this time. However, he did say that next year it can go into normal winter storage, down to 20 degrees f.

Right now, it is in my hallway to recover from the repotting. The hallway gets a moderate amount of sun and is anywhere from 45-60 on average.

I just repotted it this weekend. It really needed it and I needed to do it before the buds opened up. It is sitting in a big, somewhat literati like grow pot from China.

I may post some pics of the repottted tree in this thread in a little while.

Rob,
Somehow I missed your reply a couple days ago.
Sounds like you have a few choices of areas. I'd keep it below that 50 degrees for sure myself. You want it low enough to keep dormant without freezing it, especially since you just repotted it.
Where it was grown it probably had a mild, short winter. Ours are long, so you'll need to keep it dormant longer. So, I'd watch that 50-60 degree fluctuation.

As for 20 degrees next year, I'd be careful of that with those. IMO.
Dale

Hello Dale,,,,,, I need to correct something I typed previously, I typed cold hearty...ha ha ha ah I meant cold hardy......anyway, For this year, it must stay in an area that is in the 50's because it came from california and it has been in the heated greenhouse in massachusetts... The owner of the nursery was very specific about its heating needs this year. As for next year, it will be in a room that is about 32-49 degrees on average....

Actually, since it was just repotted, it will need to be on the warmer side for protection...Warmer as in 50's. At the nursery. most of the trees that came from california and that have been repotted go into the warm greenhouse. At least this year anyway. The day I got it from the nusery, it was in a greenhouse that was quite warm with the sun coming through. I was actually sweating.

Hello all....Here is the tree in its grow pot. I tilted it 45 degrees to the left and also tilted it so it leans toward the viewer. It will stay in this pot for about 2 years.

Also, here is a drawing of what the tree will look like (hopefully) at the end of the 2 years. This is a very possible design. I have already bent the branches with my hand to see if they would go and they will with little problem. Also, the root ball will easily fit in a pot roughly the size of the one in the drawing.

Hello Crowned one, thanks for the reply..yes they do sell on line. Here is the link

http://www.nebonsai.com/Merchant2/m...mvc?Screen=SFNT

However, as you would imagine, their greatest stock is at the nursery and not really in their store. They have like 6 huge green houses full of trees.

I would like to add that there are about 2 Atlas cedars left, like mine. Well, not as Literati like, more like informal upright/literati like. If you email them, and inquire about these trees or anything other species, I don't want to speak for them, however, I am pretty sure that they would be glad to email you some pics if you were interested in buying them. They are probably some of the friendliest and most customer orientated bonsai business owners that you will find.

Update

Well,,,I did some styling work on this cedar recently. Actually did some work on it a few weeks ago, However, I was very disatisfied with it. The tree looked like a well manacured landscape tree. Anyway, Did some more shortening of the branches, some more wiring and jinning and I think I'm on the right road. The tree will remain in this grow pot for 2 years. In the mean time, I just want to keep the tree in the pic of health like it is now.

I will probably do some more styling soon. I feel that there could be some reduction in some of the branch length. However, it looks better than it did. I am trying to plan my cuts carefully, leaving a nice bud on the ends of the branches. Here are the most recent pics. By all means, if you see something that seems out of balance or anything, feel free to comment.

hmmmm no replies, I was hoping to get some opinions on this tree.....In the last couple of days, I did make one change, I accidentally snapped the branch right underneath the apex lol..........Anyway, I used the super glue trick because the branch only broke half way into the heartwood. I was trying to get that front branch to come down and off to the side. With the super glue, I was able to work on it 12 hours later. I hope its ok, I really need that branch.

I don't have a new pic with that branch brought down, but I will say it looks a lot better.

Hope that branch lives, it's pretty important. Anyway, I'd consider planting it more upright if you want to the top to point to the right or redesign it so it points to the left.

This might be what Mindcrime was thinking. This is rotated 10 degrees right. I lowered the left side branches to adjust to the tilt. I didn't think the "hook" on the top worked. A view of it tilted to the left is another option, but I'm trying to get a life other than virtual bonsai. As Mindcrime suggested you could move the hooked apex so it wasn't as obvious.

It has been refreshing to see more of these lofty, lithe conifers on the forum lately. Gives us a break from all those fat squatty troll bonsai.
