Hey Jasonj..
I hope when you bought the tree that you were told the species was banyon.. I heard this used in relating to ficus varieties. Redpine has given you the name .. It looks to be in dire need of light/humidity .. not sure how much die back you have had but banyon is commonly referred to as a style in the art. A full canopy and aerial roots flowing from the canopy to the ground. I'd grow it on for a couple/few years to get it vigor and then think about a style.

Make sure it gets lots of direct sunlight, as much as humanly possible.

Probably the lamest excuse for an answer as there is. Surprised that an experienced bonsai person would post such a thing.
Woups looks like the above has been deleted from this thread. Oh well the mods will tale care of that and delete where necessary. Looks like you do not have nearly enough light. If you have a 35 mm camera. ( remember them) that has a built in light meter then point it at your tree. If the reading you get using the standard setting for a roll of ASA 100 film is f11@125 sec or better then you have enough light. (That is the setting for noon day sun.) . If you don’t get at least that then the tree will never grow let alone survive. If you are one of those of the new generation then pick up your digital camera. If you can photograph your tree ( and get a good picture) without a flash then maybe you have enough light. Might be better if that picture is slightly over exposed. Once you solve the light problem the tree will burst forth with new growth. Soon there after you should have a lot of styling to do. Could be that you have a nice tree there. Just need to take better care of it. Hope you don’t take this as a put down. It isn’t. Just trying to help out. Damn they were fast in the deletion of the remarks I was refuring to above. Oh well, the light meter thingie was more important anyway Last edited by RonMartin : 17-Mar-2007 at 05:56 PM. |
