I like the nebari of the one in the mica pot. If a tree has good nebari to start with it will have good design when the right principles are applied to the rest of the tree. That's my philosophy any way.

Just how big are these baldies?

What is the difference in time between the first pic and the second? It appears you did a trunk chop, I have a baldie that I want to do this with. How did you go about doing it? Time of year? Did you have to treat the wound? How tall was the tree before you chopped it? How tall is in now? Thanks of any help you can give me.

Hi Bandit,

The smaller tree I had bought at the start of spring,it was potted in a 10 gallon pot of plain nursery soil. The day of purchase I chopped the trunk, water sprayed all of the soil away.I then pruned the roots and potted into a free draining substrate. The pic where it has foliage was taken around June I believe. The other had been chopped this month due to transport reasons, next spring I will give it the root wash.Measuring from the soil line to the chop marks the first tree 21.5" tall, the second one is 29" tall.

Hi wes,
so what is your plan for these little beauties? Are you looking at the immature variant or possible flat tops or a mixture of the above? (Gary Marchal's language). I believe that you could do well with either style, when we get the really big ones we are generally limited to the Immature variant (lot's of braches that are descending- like under a snow load, while the natural trees tend to be "flat tops". http://forum.bonsaitalk.com/showthr...9307#post109307 This link should take you to a couple of larger collected trees, that while big are pretty much limited to the immature variant form, and unsuitable for the "natural" flat top styling.

Hi,

I like the direction they took with this tree. http://216.65.36.71/subscriber/ccbalcypress.htm

I sure can't carve like that and am not sure this is the best design choice for my stuff, but I really like it.

Thomas J. has another way to approach them here: http://216.65.36.71/subscriber/beginners301.htm

I'm guessing this type would be the best way for mine and probably yield a finished tree sooner.
