Bald Cypress Love It Or Leave It

Hi Folks,

I posted this tree in the gallery and had a comment that the tree should have been left in the ground.. ' no flutes or flares' ...
It is a great tree wwhich will show itself in a few years
.. thought I'd post more pics

when I found it a trunk chop had been done by a
non-bonsai-guy a year or two previous .. the tree was in the path of a boat launch.
I chose the front according to the new leader from this original chop .. it was already there and not so bad i thought ..
this is the back .. loads of flutes and flares...

This is an early shot of its semi-bald state.
Now I ask ya .. Do I need to put this back or
perhaps sell it.. and go dig another in the spring ?

i like the other side. how tall is it? i would try to sell it if it was mine. only reason i say that is there are so many formal up-right cypress and i'm sure you got ones better then this one.

BonsaiMon,
Personally I think the tree is evolving nicely. the trunk gives an impression of age. Keep up the good work.

Nice tree 'mon

Although I prefer the base from the "back." The additional fluting gives a better scale that makes the other side look coarse by comparison, at least in this 2-dimensional view. Probably better to choose the front based on the base, which can't be changed, than the top, which can, especially on such a fast-growing tree.

Regards,

Matt

Don't even think of selling it. You have a very good start on what will be a really good looking bald cypress in a few years. It would have been nice if the flair were on both sides of the trunk, but it isn't something that should keep it from some day be a very nice specimen. Congrats on a good find.

I never said the tree was a bad tree. This is a quite beautiful tree and gives an appearance of age. I do prefer the back to the front on this one. I am sure there is some way you could reverse the back to the front.

I really don't think that you should sell it.

Living Art ..’bout 36” H.. the other side has the roots and flutes
but as I mentioned it had already been topped ..
it was almost like they knew where to chop it ..
I went for the faster tree with the apex provided.

Bonsai Or .. I love it .. it has taught me much
about the Balds

Matt .. me too.. but I tink I’ll let the next owner
handle that change

Thomas_J. ..to late mon, that thought was there
when I was diggin it from mother earth.
Tanks for the kind words

dbz12fan .. tanks mon, it is a nice tree .. imagine
finding a tree like this already chopped , an apex
with a year in the making. I tink the new owner
will be able to turn it around.

.. again .. tanks for the kinds words of encouragement

peace,
tom stoute
