Bald Cypress-grampz style

Hey guys.

I have been gone for a while. Here is the bald cypress that Brian and Cindy did for me at Joanies back in the end of July.

This is the technique that we got from grampz. It looks like the two halves didn't seal very well. It was the first one we did. Not too bad. So what can i do to fill in the gap? Wood putty?

Please, pour out the suggestions.

Peace
Bob

The middle one is where the big gap is.

I'd just pop a little more glue on that to keep water out, and wait for it to heal over.

In defense of grampz, this was not exactly his technique. It was 'inspired' by grampz, but only a practice attempt. So if it looks weird, or didn't work, that's my fault, not a flaw in the method. Since grampz hasn't posted a thread on it yet, I'd feel uncomfortable describing it for him. I hope he chooses to write an article on it sometime....

Mr. Brian, and Mr. rlist,

I certainly plan in the near future [before chop time this coming spring] to post a full write-up on the process of a taper/chop for bald cypress and other 'fast callusing flexible' species that I have been working to develop for several years...I have shared some photos with many members in chat, along with somewhat of an explanation...Some of the forum members here have actually seen the tree I am currently working on to use in the write-up...

This process is a bit different than others I have seen used, and unlike some, I do believe in having good photos to verify a 'different' process does work...There is a good possibility that others have used a technique quite similar to this, but I am not aware of it...

Mr. Bob,

What you have here is a small enough gap that it should ‘heal’ or callus over in the coming season if not before…It is difficult to tell from the photo what the condition is of the live cambium close to the cut, so it is impossible to tell for sure…If it does not callus over you can always re-cut the chop later…The tree is young enough to cut it even much lower than it currently is chopped…

Feed the tree aggressively and give it all the water you can…It is almost impossible to over-water a ‘baldie’ in my opinion…When growing one out I do so in a container with no drainage holes and heavy organic soil…I only use a bonsai pot with drainage holes when the tree is ready for refinement…Even then I use a very heavy organic soil composition to insure the tree does not get dry…Letting them get dry is a sure way to kill a bald cypress…

Regards
Behr

I still have no idea what is going on here - and that's a good thing. I look forward to your article this spring or whenever you complete it.

One question - does it really involve 'wood glue'?

Dudes,

Sorry Brian if I put you on the spot. I do want to try this again.

And thank you Grampz for explaining it. I will do what you suggested.

And Mr.Graydon---It is Gorrilla glue that was used. I was in kinda of a hurry when i posted that and I should of explained more of what we were doing. I will keep every one posted on the baldie.

Peace
Bob

I can't wait. Now I am so curious! I think I know what's going on but I will wait to try on a cypress until the info is posted. Thanks again!
