People usually ignore this when I tell them though.

The trouble is getting them into California, correct? We have restrictions. Any nurseries in California?

The answer is a 100 percent yes. Pond ,montezuma, bald, all do great. Just add water.

Where to buy in LA?

Try house of bonsai in lakewood or any big full service nursery you will find some. they may be in boxes or 15's though. Now is the right time to shop. Bout 20 days till sprout out! wink!

Hey sterling. BC can grow in socal. Ive grown them in Riverside. 10-20 degrees plus on LA. They would go summer dormant if you missed watering them for more than 5 minutes in the 100+ no humidity heat. That was a good time to keep them submerged but even then the leaves would droop.

A side thought, If you join National Arbor day they will send you 10 seedling trees. They have a wonderful selection of oaks and conifers and all sorts of fruit and nut trees. But it does you no good in socal because they will only send redbud, arizona cypress, or BC. Still its a good deal for 10 bucks for 10 babies.

For a tree with a 3 inch base, I'd reduce the trunk to about 18 inches if you were to chop it. New growth will occur in spring. The new growth tends to be at the crown but constant pruning stimulates new growth near the base.

Good luck!

With a 3" trunk the 18" mark would be ok for the final height of the tree.As is chopping at 18" will leave him with a straight and uninteresting pole.

He could slip it into a grow pot now then this spring chop at about 5-6" above the soil line.Let the new leader grow tall then the following spring chop that section back. Then let a new leader grow from the second section, and keep repeating this clip&grow process for like 4 years.Working in these sections would build him a nice trunk line that flows with the eyes starting from the base.

Redpine:

I guess the main issue with this particular tree is the lack of taper. Your technique will definitely achieve a wonderful taper for the patient enthusiast (who said good bonsai happens overnight?). A shari or carving could compensate for the lack of taper and distract the viewer. A quicker option would be to purchase a tree with a better taper. BTW, $ 100 for this type of material sounds excessive IMO. I can find decent raw BC with a decent base in my local Home Depot for about $75.
