There's a "TOO dense foliage" thing? In Japan azaleas are grown frequently for their twiggy ramification and dense foliage,...flowers aren't that congruent too a tranquill zen garden or rustic tea house gardens. The judges mustv'e had their palms a lil greasy,...if I aint bein' to subtle.

Zen,
Azaleas are grown for their dense foliage when they are in the landscape. When they are in a pot, they are grown for their flowers. Too much foliage keeps the flowers from opening properly. They also are not traditionally considered as bonsai, from what I understand. As far as the remainder of your statement, hopefully you were not serious.

Satsuki make tremendous bonsai, look at the trunks, whether you want the flowers or not. Zen, guess you should think before you type buddy. I would suggest that the branches have not been appropriately wired give the tree the dimension and openess it needs. Great trunk- now needs the rest of the structure. John

John, I didn't mean that they weren't good bonsai, but was merely commenting on the fact that they were not originally intended as such, but were instead a separate horticultural subject. And are still viewed as such by many groups in Japan. As far as Peter's tree goes, I would take it in a second. 'Nikko' is a superb variety. As I'm sure you agree, the judges criticisms are not without merit, and should be easily corrected.
Take care,
zube

Thats what I mean the bigest problem I have is even though I can get the azalea cheap they are more bush like than tree. they seem to be very slow growing and I just can't see them ever getting like these. I guess I will have to keep looking in old Gardens and I might get lucky

Brett,

trunks like that are very hard to find in gardens, you have to be willing to pay the price for a satsuki.
They are not cheap, I know but they're worth it!!!
