Red Leaf Azalea slant trunk

I call her Pink Lady ,due to the color of her spring blossoms. She is about a yr. old,but only been in training a little over three months. I got her at a local nursery for 89 cents. She is just topping out at 6". Remember you guys,....i'm an uber-noob,...I know nothing about bonsai, yet, but i'm trying so go easy on me.

Very nice tree, especially for 0.89, I would get rid of the moss, it is only needed when displaying you tree. The moss will rob the tree or water and nutrients. I would start looking for a larger training pot. Probably 3 to 4 times the size of the current pot and also look for some Kanuma bonsai soil. Next spring, just as the buds start to swell, repot it in 100% Kanuma and let it go for a couple of years. You can start to wire some bend into the trunk after you repot if you want. It should get morning sun and afternoon shade, outside. Azaleas like damp, but not wet roots. so water when the soil is almost dry. A little balanced fertilizer starting about a month after you repot and you should see a lot of new growth next year. Welcome to the club!

Hey cool ppl are responding, and better yet actually giving advice! The thing about getting her into a larger pot is,she has a small rootmass right now(actually almost sits on top of the soil and just a bit of the roots go down into the pot) so i'm just letting her fill that one in till spring repot. Tnks for the comments and advice. Thanks for the wiring statement.Could very well be too much sun on her,...jj,...I keep Pink Lady in almost full shade except in winter and early spring when she is about to bloom.Feedback is real nice.

Soltan, Lets see, you are down under so the seasons are a little backward. Is it all over the tree of just in spots? It could be to much sun, but it is more likely that the old leaves are starting to turn and fall off as new leaves bud. Azaleas grow 2 sets of leaves, one in the spring and one in the fall or late summer. As the new leaves grow, the last seasons leaves will turn color and eventually fall off. I didn't know this when I started and thought I was killing my azaleas. Luckly, I have a good azalea guy in our club and he has taught me a lot. Good luck to all.

jjeter sorry this took so long I lose posts on here
You will be happy to know that the azalea is doing much better in a shadier spot. it was the middle of winter when I posted but the other azaleas I have were green as at the time, it is now well into spring here. I moved the red leaved one to were the others were. It took it's time but after just bursting out with a heap of flowers which came from nowere it's all green again. I'll wait for the flowers to go and cut it back I guess it will be fine now. Thanks for the response.
How is yours going Zen

Unfortunately I know now what I wish I wouldv'e known then,...DO NOT REPOT AND WIRE AN AZALEA AT THE SAME TIME ! It is no more ,it ceases to be, it sings now in the chior eternal, ephemeral, evermore , It is an ex-tree,...it's bleedin deeed ! Live and learn I guess works for the artist but not so good for the tree. Oh well got my pot back anyhow.

To bad Zen I have a few of these going at the moment the supermarkets bought to many of them and I picked up a few for a bargain. I still am a bit clueless how the masters get these to look like trees but like I said they are cheap here at the moment so I have plenty to muck with

Yours in bargain

Landerloos, your pot selection will be a considerable upgrade for a beautiful tree.

Please show us a pic when it has been repotted.
