Azalea---Just For Fun

Here is the only azalea I'll probably ever own. I just grow it for the flowers, as you can probably tell. Something just to add a little color to my collection for about a week out of the year.

It's very pretty, but not for me. I can see why you grow it just for the flowers.

Hmph, I don't. I think those pruning marks in the trunk just add to the illusion of age.
It is a nice little tree, I'd say.

Re: Azalea---Just For Fun

Many people grow azaleas just for the flowers......and yours is a beauty. As azaleas get older, and when they're pinched properly, into artistic pads, and the tree is formed, they can be beautiful bonsai all year. Your tree is a little young for that.....but i do agree, the scars on the trunk do add to the feeling of age, and in time they'll become even more attractive.
Thus far your tree doesn't really have a shape. If you want to, you could do some "drastic pruning" with the guidance of a knowledgeable person, (There were recently 8 people certified as Azalea Instructors, by the El Dorado Bonsai school, after completing a 3 year course - one of them would be great.....or you could ask Mr. Kinosita, when he comes to Fresno in May), and you could be on your way to an attractive "year round' azalea.
The two colors of the flowers are gorgeous........

Thomas,
When I replied to you earlier I had my "wires crossed" thinking you were in Fresno, CA....but now I see you're in Texas. My general comments are still applicable, but I'm sure you don't know Mr. Kinoshita, nor the El Dorado school.. Sorry for not reading more closely.

Very pretty. I like the two colors on one plant. Is it a satsuki?

Re: Azalea---Just For Fun

Robert,
Thanks for taking the time to give me that info, even if I can't take advantage of it. I used to live in Ca. but that was a long time ago. Sometimes I still wish I were back there. The summers in Tx. are unbearable.

Sandi,
no it isn't a Satsuki. Satsukis have small leaves whereas this one has giant leaves just like the flowers. If I'm not mistaking, the person I bought it from said it was a Coopers azalea. Never heard of it, but I'll take his word for it.

Bonsainut;
I guess I'm just not that much into them. This one is kind of sensitive when it comes to watering. It'll be doing good and for whatever reason will start dropping it's leaves when it feels it is being overwatered. A lot of worrying for two weeks of glory every spring.
