Re: azalea beauty
sorry for the large pic. I am new to this game. I would like explain a little about myself. I live in Northern CA and have been studying bonsai for many years. THis azalea for size reference is about 4 ft tall with an 7-8 inch nebari.
I have more pics of my trees that i will post soon. Any suggestions would be great. Until then- regards- CCbonsai |

Re: azalea beauty
This is really a penjing style and a nice one. I would enjoy it for what it is for a decade or so maybe with an eye toward eventually reducing the length of the main trunk by 1/3 or so.
The two branches off to the right that are just in front of the calendar need to come down a lot because they disagree with the branch position of every other branch on the tree. Same for the branch up near the top right. I would thin out the growth on the baby tree there or it will get chunky real soon. Regards, Matt

Re: azalea beauty
thanks for the suggestions, this is what i have done. I like it very much. I also thinnned out the secondary trunk, which is not shown. Would anyone recommend anything else?
thanks |

Re: azalea beauty
i dont have any intention in having a penjing. What justifies this tree as a penjing? What can i do to not make it one. I was hoping to create a mother daughter. Not a penjing.

Re: azalea beauty
Penjing is not a style like broom or informal upright, but a 'school of thought'. It is much like bonsai, but it has strong roots in China, not Japan. P'en t'sin or penjing is more often miniature landscape than bonsai. Sometimes it includes only stones, moss and figurines. No trees at all. Some of them are quite much like saikei and some of them more like bonsai.

Re: azalea beauty
BTW, your ID picture would be a great example of p'en t'sin, if it didn't have a pot.

Re: azalea beauty
Some of the Penjing characteristics are the width to height ratio, the sinuous trunkline and the stylized feel, almost like a brush painting.
if you wanted a more classical bonsai, you could air layer the main trunk at about 1/2 its height and redevelop the apex.
