Hello everyone, I have been very busy travelling around looking for new rocks to work with...
And again I found myself in the middle if the outback at the beginning of summer...47 degrees C...Looking for bonsai rocks...My family thinks I have gone completely insane...With snakes, scorpions and spiders under every rock...Maybe there right... Its all Mike's fault anyway.... I managed to borrow a mates helicopter and go deep into the bush to go where white man has never been before... As we approached this spot a mob of large kangaroos freaked out at our approach and almost made me soil my shorts...My wife thought it was all wonderful...I hate the hopping rats with a vengeance after being kicked in the scrotum by an irate buck a few years back... But that's another story... Here are the new photos of some rocks and trees I found growing in limestone outcrops on my friends cattle station...I'm not sure what species they are but they are doing very well after collection...They were found in a very hot and dry location so the soil mix I used to pot them up was 100% crushed volcanic rock...Its been 5 days and they are doing very well indeed with no sign of any transplant shock...If anyone could identify the species I would be grateful... I only managed to snap one branch on the 400 km dirt road home...One branch too many... Happy growing Last edited by taipan : 27-Sep-2005 at 07:26 AM. |

few more photos...
A nice bougainvillea...and an interesting warning sign.. The giant white blocks in the bush are solid marble slabs as large as cars ready to be cut into bonsai trays...(I wish...) The marble around here is exported all around the world...and comes in many different colours... Someone blew away this feral pig just before we got here...They cause enormous damage to the enviroment...But they make the worlds best bacon... Last edited by taipan : 27-Sep-2005 at 07:39 AM. |

Nice. Now, how difficult is it to dig up those trees growing in the rock like that? Just curious.

Hi Zen, The trees wobble when given a little shake...A good sign...Then the little guys just pop right out of the crevices... They were found in cracks with soil depths from 1 inch to 6 inches...They had masses of feeder roots around the trunk... Quote:
Hi midwest...no that's not my helicopter...I sort of hate Robinson choppers but I couldn't be choosy on this occasion...I prefer a Bell JetRanger III.. Just a safer aircraft all round...The guys crash these things all the time doing heli-mustering here...But when you see the way they fly it doesn't surprise me lol Quote:
Hi Jerry, I like the bark too.... its very similar to a melaleuca bark...a nice golden honey look in the dawn light... Quote:
It is... aint it Red lol... Don't worry mate...The adrenaline and smile on my face while I'm doing this speaks for itself...I swear my whole face aches every time I come back.. Until the next adventure up into the alpine rainforest guys! |
