Auction Bargains

Hello Everyone,

The Azalea City Bonsai Society (Mobile, AL) held it's annual auction this past Saturday and there were a lot of great bargains to be had (well I think so anyway). For anyone looking for japanese maples to put in grow boxes, there were around forty or so (from 3/4" to 1" diameter trunks) going for about $5 on average! Fifteen gallon camelias (hand picked by Joe Day) went for $25 on average! Lots of really good starter trees of various species going for a buck or two. I would have bid on more stuff if I had known the items I really wanted would be gotten so cheaply.

I got this slab (carved by Joe Day) along with 16 trident maples of various sizes (the largest was ~1" in diameter). I got it for a lot less than expected . I really wanted this slab. Joe's slabs are sought after down here because they are very labor intensive and expensive to create. As soon as he makes one, it's sold or he uses it himself for one of his fantastic forest plantings.

Auctions are a funny thing. I got the great hornbeam, the slab with 16 tridents, a starter maple and hinoki cypress for for a steal ($150 total). This is a little bald cypress I donated (six months in development). It went for $25. Go figure.

Best Regards,

David

Adam,

I belong to the New Orleans club (our auction was last month) and this is the first time I've attended the Mobile auction. I went to their annual "Day of Bonsai" event last March and was very impressed with the lectures and demos. Just one more reason to join a club.

David

Adam, I believe you are familiar with New England Bonsai. They should be able to help you hook up with a club. I think there are several in the eastern part of MA.

Thanks David and Jay,
I actually think I am going to make a trip to New England Bonsai this weekend. I am already going to Bonsai West (they are having a 3 week long open house) and had planned to stop into New England Bonsai as well.

Thanks again
Adam
