Hi everybody, I like this little tree! It's unconventional , but very pleasant looking. If I were you Asus, I would enjoy it the way it is for while, then when it gets overgrown, then consider a restyling. Then do what John said and reduce it. I think it will get overgrown and look like a bush pretty soon though. At least for now, I would bring the top branch down for a smooth rounded canopy. Maybe plant it a little higher in the pot too.

Good day!
Si

I wish I had that plant. I think it has huge potential. I would air layer off the long branch, then go with John's suggestion for a shohin. Once the long branch is gone you can really see the tree.

that branch is the counter balance. If you remove it you have two branches that poke out opposite directions and then go upwards still with odd angles.the tree is not very high at all, and t has a huge amount of bland boring trunk. I think its why the original owner went with the semi cascade.

I cant see it, maybe someone can visually show me, then I may consider going back to "having no bonsai". Right now Im very unsure on what you seem to all see, so am going to oppose it.

more images. I sort of see a possiblity, but its going to take alot off, and put the tree in risk of heat stress come summer.

I think as it is now the tree has nothing really going for it. The long straight (or slightly bowed) branches with no taper are not very interesting and the tree looks very young. They don't seem like they can be improved much by bending so you will likely have to do some chopping and growing to make the best of this material. I don't really have an idea for the final style based on what I've seen (nebari might have something to say about that) but I think it would look markedly different from what we see today. This is pretty much raw material so you have lots of choices.

Good luck!

Gday Asus!

Seems to me as though your parade is already pretty wet, so it can't hurt if I rain on it a little more...

There is shape to your tree, but it's only an outline: it is nicely rounded, with the apex where it belongs, but it appears to me that the previous owner achieved this facade at the expense of the structure of the tree. Come winter and leaf-drop, I suspect that you'll see what others are talking about, and that the 'cascade' branch will display little but a "huge amount of bland boring [stick]".

As it stands, you have 3 branches leaving the trunk at more-or-less the same point, so aesthetically (and rules-wise), one of them will need to go eventually. I vote for the removal of the 'cascade' branch, but for the time being, I'd keep it on board as a taper-builder for the lower trunk. If this branch had reached its current end-point via a series of curves/angles, and/or displayed significant taper, I could be persuaded to keep it. As is, that branch has all the hallmarks of an adventitious shoot which has been (inadvertently) allowed to become the tree's defining 'feature' (in fact, the more I look at it, the more I'm inclined to think the original owner grew this branch out in order to be sacrificed).

Not wanting to leave you in Limbo, I've decided to do a couple of really rough virts to give you an idea where I'd try to take this tree, given its current branching. It may not be what you were wanting to see and hear, but at least I haven't advised you to plant it in the ground or grow box...

I hope all of this makes sense.

Thanks and good luck.

FlyBri.

PS: I think this tree could benefit from a few years of growing in a larger container or a hole in the ground.
