Bought this ashe juniper today. I would welcome suggestions. What do you like as front? Any ideas how you would take it?

when i first saw this tree i thought, "there is way too much going on in there". my very crude virt would require a lot of backbudding and working on the wood of the shari. with too much going on, i would go for something more minimalistic, like this. just my opinion.

Perhaps just a tilt to the left in pic #38530, to get the trunk coming out of the soil at angle and the apex more centered over the base then the jin would become an old branch instead of an old trunk. Just a thought.

Whatever you do Ralph,
Make sure this tree gets full sun and no under shade cloth protection.
Cover the pot with a towel or something to protect the roots if you have to,
because putting it under shade cloth will mean its demise. Vito and I both found out the hard way.

Chris Thank you so much for taking the time to do the virtual. It is currently only rough stock and indeed there is to much going on. My first mission is to feed this one heavy and thicken and develop the foliage, keeping it tightly pinched, and forcing the growth in. I dont think I will be as sucessful as your virt in bringing it that far in, because it grows so far out on that living limb, but I should never the less be able to come close to your virt. As the foliage thickens, and I can develop it into well defined pads, I will selectively snub back many of the deadwood branches that snake through the foliage now.

I agree a rounded pot, when it comes time will be the choice selection for this one.
I was thinking maybe a Dale Cochoy "bacon and rivets":
http://forum.bonsaitalk.com/showthr...08&page=7&pp=10

I think this kind of rustic round is quite suitable to this tree.

Zen,
38530 is certainly a possibility. I really like the duality of the dead wood nebari, and the live vein nebari. I think I want to show this off as much as possible.

Hi Tom!
Thanks for the advice as always! That's good info to know. The tub it is in now is about about 19 inches across, and the soil is 7 inches deep. A cursory exploration with chopstick reveals that the root mass has pretty much colonized the entire pot. I think it will take two seasons to reduce the root mass appropriately for potting. What do you all think? Too conservative a plan? Or too aggressive?

Chrism's virt seems about right Esp. on shorting the long shariI would keep most of the dead branch jins though.

I see a different styling idea for your tree. Inspired by Walter, I would like to see a shorter tree that inter-twines the foliage and the deadwood. You will need to heavily wire as well as tilt the trunk to the left to bring the live trunk and branches into a more central position.
BTW Excellent material which is very hard to find here is oz.

David,

I printed out your virtual and spent considerable amount of time evaluating it with my tree. I think your idea/virtual is quite achievable. Thanks for the effort and the idea.

I haven't got the tools to do a virtual but i would take 38528 and lean it to the left so that the big jin is pretty much straight up. Then wire the foliage in a downward flowing motion (not cascade) and remove some of the smaller jins pointing to the right. I believe this image would tell the story of a juniper on a rough mountain side where a boulder has fallen on its head and killed of the original trunk line, forcing it to continue its growth to the right.
