Cut the large branch growing towards the upper left corner of the picture. THe dark color at the base of the branch is the branch thickening. It will continue to thicken and is already out of proportion.

Jagua, thats not a branch, its a leaf stem! Theres only the one branch on this tree, and its leaning to the right in semi cascade style.

Larry, just where exactly do you think branches come from. Do you think the branch fairy comes in at night and grafts them on to your tree?

Given an amount of time, the leaf base that is beginning to harden off by turning brown will acheive bark and become next years, albeit, small branch. The tree is apical dominate, which is something that Carl and I have already discussed about this ash. If you notice, the leaf stem hardening off is going to try to be the new apex of the tree if you leave it alone.

We can all be sure that by next week you will be making a double trunk han-kengai out of this poor sapling

Regards, Bonsai-al

Larry, What Jagua was trying to tell you was that this leaf stem , as you call it, is thikening and becoming woody. This will become a branch! This tree is trying like hell to make a new top on the tree. The tree wants to grow straight up, not sideways.

At this point it may be a leaf stem but it will become branch. If your plan is to make this a semi cascade then you need to cut it back pronto, else in a few more months it will be branch.

My attitude may stink to you, butt if you want to learn something the heed some advice and quit being so defensive. Use this as a learning expeirence and stop acting like you know so much. With the type of attitude you display here and the type of tree you have displayed here it is easy to see that your bonsai knowledge is limited. To emotionaly dismiss valuable help is ignorant.

Regards, Al

I concurr with my learned collegue from Fresno. larry, you have been around enough to know Al's style. To the point ,with a little sarcasm and humor. His contribution has been very very generous to the bonsai community.

Anywho, tough species Ash, Hopefully it will be a success in the long run. I wish for you easier and more enjoyable trees to fuss over. Just One nuts opinion, not the gospel, you know?
