any ideas about this Cedar
I have this cedar that I think I am training in a weird way. It is/was about 2 1/2 ' tall before I wired it. Is this a good way of starting a bonsai? Does anyone have any questions or comments about this tree?

Hi,
Just my 2 cents : I think this tree is really much to thin compared to it's length. If it were mine I would put it in the ground or a large growing box for a couple of years to fatten it up. I would train it as a literati. Upright, with some bends and only foliage at the top. ( am working right now, so cannot make a virtual) gr. René |

IMHO it looks like a great candidate for a phoenix graft.

Whidn,
I think Rene is right on this one. Almost everybody on this forum will tell you it either needs to go in a grow box or large garden pot. Once in a grow box or large container, leave it there for a few years. You will be supprised to see how much growth it will put on in 2-3 years in a grow box. Adam ![]() |

I personally don't like the rainbow-shaped bend in the trunk. Look at photographs of well-designed cascade trees, either online or in books. I think you'll find this gradual bend to be very rare among those, for a reason.
Try sharper angles instead - I think there's little substitute at this point for looking at lots of previous trees and carefully studying what makes them effective. Best regards, Old Mister

Pheonix graft
What the heck is a pheonix graft? I havent studied up too much on grafting. I plan to do so when I have more time to read. I havent even experimented with grafting yet but I plan to do so as well. Thank you everyone for all your comments and suggestions.

Check the ***FAQ*** here or above under Bonsai Terms and look up Tanuki. It's the same thing
Since the understock of a Tanuki or Phoenix graft is just a dead piece of driftwood, it's not really a graft in the strictest sense. It's also guaranteed not to "take," but the illusion can be pretty realistic. Regards, Matt
