another undecided tree
This is another one of those trees that got put on the back burner last year.I got this from a local nursery and brought it home and pruned all the branches that I knew I was not going to use at the momment.Did some wiring. Wish I would of taken pics before I started but I always get in a rush and forget to take pics. From now on I will take pics before and after(ummm?a new gallery?maybe?possibly??
)Oh well believe me it was really full. I think this tree would make a nice natural style. The thing that I would like is some opinions on the split trunk towards the top. With Hinoki's the foliage is a pain sometimes to keep in Bonsai form but I really like these trees.Help me JHill![]()

Re: another undecided tree
You will need to make a decision between the two leaders on your Hinoki Cypress.
Often the smaller of the two and wiring it up would be a better long term approach, but I can't see the branch union where the two leaders and probably several branches join. Either leader would most likely work. Choose for the best taper and available branching, but do make a selection and remove the rejected leader entirely. Sometimes the decision is simplified if you look at the rootbase and judge prospective fronts. If the rootbase looks much better on one side, you can remove the leader on the opposite side so that the wound will be hidden at the back of the tree. Trees are prone to develop swelling when multiple leaders develop, and you will need to do some branch removing and carving at the same time to disguise the impact of this. Keep a very small branch at this point and feather it to hide the knot and wound. Remove one of the two leaders and all the remaining branches from this point or the swelling will increase. Try not to create too large a wound in the process. Maybe take the leader this year and one of the side branches, then do the other branches next year after some healing has taken place. Try to emphasize the grace and elegance of this species. Pinch when the new growth begins in late spring. Hold a foliage fan beteen the thumb and forefinger of one hand and pinch out the bulk of extending growth with the fingertips of the other hand. The fans of foliage can make very convincing boughs provided they are thinned regularly and not allowed to become dense so that they stand up at odd angles. Regards, Matt

Re: another undecided tree
Hi Matt,
I kinda figured that maybe that leader on the left should go. The only thing is that if I remove it their will be a blank space there which there is not a branch to fill that area. But I really don't want it to swell either. I think though if I was to remove it and put it to the back it might not be so bad. I'll pull it out of storage and take another look at it. Jhill
