For my money, Al's criticism is spot-on, and with all due respect, neither virtual addresses the problem. I reason it this way: in nature, it takes a major event to the tree to change the direction of a trunk or thick branch dramatically, and this is almost always accompanied by a change in caliper, or texture, or a break-in-attitude. A trunk that goes through a question-mark curve without some such change seems gratuitous. (All right, I know we are not creating nature, only evoking it; but to my eyes, even some of the most dramatic/bizarre bonsai have a kind of "botanical plausibility," if you will.)

Cheerz,

Barry

David, I think the material you have chosen is interesting and has many possibilities. I would like to make a few comments and a suggestion. As has been pointed out by people like Marco Invernasi, old junipers inevitably have jins and more importantly sharis. The jins occur because a branch dies and the shari follow because the vein feeding the branch dies. This may take awhile but it is inevitable. When a jin is created it may not always be a simple matter to find the vein which has fed the branch but with time it becomes easier (the vein dies and the surrounding live veins thicken). Furthermore very mature junipers for some reason appear to twist with time. My suggestion ( and I am not sure from the photos whether it is possible ) is to not only make the sharis as you have indicated ( and perhaps to add another on the back side) but to twist the trunk by some multiple of 360 degrees. The sharis will then coil around the trunk and I think make them much more interesting. Furthermore the end tip of the tree could be twisted down into the open area created by the large bend in the trunk. This may seem a bit drastic but it is usually not so difficult to do with procumbens. I apologize for not having the skills to make a virtual of this. Hank
