another azalea
any suggestions on this azalea. I have been doing moto-ba-dome to it for the last 2 years and mesuki pruning it as well. I am pretty happy with the results. my question is, would anyone take a particular branch out, why?
thanks- ccbonsai |

Re: another azalea
No not really, except maybe right up top near the apex where it looks like there might be a large branch going back and another forward? Is it a layering opportunity? Only a closeup will tell. The crown could use some density with perhaps some forward branches in the vicinity of the middle of the tree to disguise the lack of taper just at that point.
The tree is getting a little tallish, but it suits it. Unfortunately the movement in the lower 1/3 might disappear slowly as the tree ages and thickens, so this should be taken into consideration in the long-term plan. Maybe down the road the branch on the lower left could be removed and the planting angle changed slightly with the branch above coming down more to fill in a bit. What do you think?

Re: another azalea
thanks for the comment.
This picture really doesn't do the tree justice. The apex branches don't go back then towards you. I want to push growth back along the branches to produce a full tree. I never thought about removing the primary branch. Nice suggestion. Matt, I have to ask... How long have you been practicing bonsai because you seem very knowledgable about bonsai. I also live in N. CA and was wondering if you are in any clubs. there is probably a chance i have met you somewhere. Take care- |

Re: another azalea
I have been involved in bonsai for about 12 years. I belong to Midori Bonsai Club in San Jose, California and Bay Area Bonsai Associates (BABA) in Oakland, CA.
Regards, Matt
